The start of June has marked a few things. Flynn turned three months old, I returned to training under my coach Keegan Williams and it has also been one year since I last raced (Cairns 70.3). A great enormous huge thank you to Pro-form, Cambridge Fitness Centre and Graham Scott who have continued to sponsor me throughout this period I am incredibly grateful to have such supportive people around me.
The return to training has been going well, it's also brought a stark contrast to my day I go from pushing, sweating, a bit of grunting, the odd curse at the cold wind and rain that winter brings and lack of sleep in the mix, to coming home to a house we now make a great effort to keep warm and singing nursery rhymes or doing whatever required to get a smile or giggle from Flynn. It is a very nice way to spend recovery. Both Elliot and I have also gone beyond our usual musical genres into a whole other world, this one being the biggest hit at the moment:

Elliot and I worked to establish a bit of a routine between us in those first three months so I knew what I could manage when starting under a structured program again. I'm now into my fourth week week on Keegans program and things are progressing really well, I'm belting out around 16 hours a week of training, which is largely in small hours of the day, but the work is getting done. My body remains a little different from it's former self, I now have boobs and a bit of booty....you can imagine my horror when I finally managed to get back into my pre-pregnancy swim togs, only to be told half way during the swim set that my entire right boob was hanging out....I'll put that down to the hazards of returning to training while breastfeeding and being a bit too ambitious with my swimwear. But beside the odd hazard, even though I feel that I am starting from scratch again the gains are slowly coming. It was only a few weeks ago I was questioning how or why I ever ran marathons, let alone finish an ironman, being fit is easy to take for granted. So I felt a good sense of accomplishment after making it around our old 28km stomping ground ...admittedly I did have Elliot bring the car as I was afraid I wouldn't make the distance. It was one of those situations where sometimes you don't know what you are capable of until you give it a try. Managed to make the the distance (woo hoo!) and time wise it wasn't too shabby, not far off the pace I used to finish it in when I was in a much greater condition ...a pretty long time ago. Cycling has been the most difficult to bring up to speed simply because of the time required on the bike as I only have the weekends at the moment for longer sessions.
Looking ahead to races I will be competing in a few local/regional events over these next few months.
In the past a portion of my prize money has always gone back into the sport to get to another race, travel/accommodation and other expenses have to be met. However pregnancy and (a beautiful gem) baby = no racing for the last year which results in a empty travel fund, so it is likely I will build up towards our New Zealand summer and go from there. There are a couple races I would like to target before the end of the year (a 70.3 and a ironman) however this will depend on a few things and in the mean time I have plenty of work to do to get competitive again. The main thing is that the fire in the belly is still roaring, Flynn is a very happy baby, we absolutely love having him in our lives and Elliot has been an amazing dad and great supporter.
Thank you again to my sponsors Pro-form, Cambridge Fitness Centre and Graham Scott from Chartered Accounts whose support has allowed me to get started again and huge thanks to my physio Paul Taitoko at Soar Physio, Ostseopath Gary Mikkelsen at Cambridge Family Osteopath and Massage Therapist Kristina Campbell Advanced Massage Therapy...I don't think I would be striding out my runs at all without their help early on, it is so great to be working people who are passionate about movement again.
Great to also have Hamilton Shoe Clinic and Trek on board too.
